New seismic and disruptive events are upending the pace of innovation – and leading companies are jumping into the fray, trying to differentiate themselves through emerging business models. But here is the hard truth: Enterprises are wasting money, resources and time putting on a facade of innovation that falls short of customer and shareholder expectations. There is an inherent expectation that these incremental, and in many cases “siloed,” investments or initiatives will lead to sustained business impact. The time has come to move beyond “innovation theater” into a more mature adoption of innovation that drives measurable business results.
Now is the time for Innovation 2.0.

Consumerization of IT and the Internet of Things (IoT) are revolutionizing how people live. Users are increasingly becoming accustomed to instant gratification when using technology in their personal lives, whether for gaming, shopping or managing their daily activities. And they want the same kind of immediate service when they go to work. To address this expectation, IT support needs to adapt, evolve and even revolutionize itself or become outdated. In short, IT support must reinvent itself into a friendly, proactive service that is tied directly to a business’ profitability.

There is a tectonic shift in the way we work. We expect the same kind of intuitive, tactile experience with our workplace technology that we now take for granted with our smartphones, tablets and gaming systems. We expect our devices to talk to each other and update automatically. Virtual meetings should be as easy to set up as a video chat, and whatever we need to do our jobs should be as easy to tailor as a streaming music or video application.

For any sized organization, securing data and networks today is a daunting task. New vulnerabilities are discovered almost daily; new malware strains are developed as soon as a detection script is written for the old ones; and cybercriminals can buy prepackaged exploit kits on the Darknet backed by professional support teams. As a security analyst, you need more than a few point solutions designed to defend the network’s edge. You need visibility, perspective and an innate sense of when things just don’t seem right.

For many organizations, managing network vulnerabilities and risks is a lesson in frustration. Vulnerability scans are typically conducted in response to compliance mandates, and they can reveal up to tens of thousands of exposures—depending upon network size. Scan results are often a complex puzzle of misconfigured devices, unpatched software, and outdated or obsolete systems. And security administrators must struggle to quickly identify and remediate or mitigate the exposures that pose the greatest risk.

Sometimes the best clues to a security breach aren’t found in the contents of the files that are traversing your network. Instead, they’re found in the details of the network metadata. An unusually large data transfer associated with simple web-browsing traffic can indicate the injection of malware. Also, an examination of any changes in an attached file’s entropy can reveal encryption or compression activities that can indicate the addition of embedded malware.

While working to maintain tactical control of the mobile environment, IT managers often find themselves drowning in minutiae. Overwhelmed by the number of moving parts, they’re unable to stay abreast of the latest threats, let alone extract meaning from or make decisions based on the mountains of data now being collected. With limited IT resources dedicated to mobile technology tools that facilitate reactive rather than proactive management—and limited visibility into mobile intelligence across the organization—many managers have had to choose between security and productivity as the focus of their efforts.

While it might be desirable to standardize end users on one or two types of devices that all run the same operating system, most organizations don’t have that luxury. Today’s users demand an extraordinary level of flexibility and convenience—which means most organizations support a vast assortment of endpoints, including laptops and desktops (both PCs and Macs), tablets and hybrid devices, smartphones, and even wearables and IoT devices.
